What is Sustainability?
A universal definition of sustainability was created in 1983 when the World Commission on Environment and Development met to address concerns about the rapid deterioration of our environment and natural resources. Specifically this related to the environmental deterioration for economic and social development. The Commission, called together by the United Nations, recognized that the environmental problems were global in nature and that policies were needed for sustainable development. It was through this commission that the universal definition of sustainability was agreed upon:

"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

Many organizations throughout the world are now responding in different ways to ultimately attain a consciousness, measurement and verification for building sustain-ably for future generations. The foundation for all green building is energy efficiency, with the goal of deceasing the need for fossil fuels in heating and cooling the building envelope.
U.S. Green Building Council Energy Star Home Sealing

The World and US Green Building Council has created the first voluntary national green building standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings and homes called: LEED™ (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System.

The National Association of Home Builders has recently announced the launch of the NAHB National Green Building Standards and the new Certified Green Professional educational designation. This is the Industry’s first-ever consensus-based green standard for single and multi-family, residential remodeling, and lot and site development.

UltraTouch was developed by Bonded Logic with sustainability as a primary goal. An indication of this are the number of points it contributes toward green building categories:
  • Energy and Atmosphere for Energy Performance
  • Materials and Resources for Recycled Content and Rapidly Renewable Resource
  • Indoor Environmental Air Quality: Low Emitting Materials
  • Innovation in Design: Innovative material choices throughout the project
