Green Washing 8/7/2008 Tell me about your latest experience with Green Washing. Here's one from the insulation world. There are essentially 4 types of insulation: UltraTouch: Cotton Insulation Cellulose: Paper Insulation Glass: Beloved fiberglass Foams: Chemicals: Proprietary ingredients where solution A is mixed with solution B to go off like epoxy, emitting "stuff" into the environment. What do they tell us about off-gassing? Here's the Scoop: Foams are highly flammable and are not biodegradable. Foams are all the rage and claim to be green. Even soy-based foams are biased in their Green Marketing claims for soy content. Yes, foams are excellent insulators, and by far the best sealants. But will someone tell me what the ingredients are in those foams?? * In a Sustainable world, technical products (foams, tv's, computers, cars etc.) live in a separate cycle than do natural products (wood, hemp, cotton, cork, food etc.). * In a Sustainable world, technical and natural products are easily separated at the end of their life. Then technical products are used again for the same or some other purpose, natural products return to the Earth or enter the natural cycle again. * In a Sustainable world, cellulose and cotton are the order of the day. Cotton Insulation: Is what It Is: Denim. UltraTouch, try it on for size! :-) Katy Slater, Ecopreneur |
